The Nevada County Department of Social Services offers a supplemental assistance program for adults who do not qualify for federal or state programs such as CalWORKs or SSI/SSP. 

The program is designed to meet basic needs when no other resources are available and serves as a last-resort safety net. General Assistance is a repayable grant, not an entitlement.

Services include:

  • Emergency cash assistance for housing, food, and basic needs
  • Temporary employment services for individuals deemed employable

Program eligibility is determined through a needs assessment and requires repayment under certain conditions.

The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) operates the Housing Assistance for Ukrainians (HAU) program to help eligible Ukrainian arrivals and others displaced from Ukraine secure stable housing and work toward self-sufficiency in California.

Services include:

  • Rental assistance for up to six months, covering up to 50% of monthly rent
  • Maximum housing benefit of $10,000 per household
  • Support with security deposits and utility payments
  • Light-touch case management for housing stabilization
  • Required participation in employment service activities

Additional details:

HAU is available to people paroled into the United States between February 24, 2022, and September 30, 2024. New applications must be submitted by September 30, 2025.

Services may continue through March 2026 for those enrolled before the deadline.

CalHFA supports the needs of renters and homebuyers by providing financing and programs so more low and moderate-income Californians have a place to call home. Its Single-Family Division provides first mortgage loans and down payment assistance to first-time homebuyers.

  • The Dream For All Shared Appreciation Loan is a down payment assistance program for first-time homebuyers to be used in conjunction with the Dream For All Conventional first mortgage for down payment and/or closing costs. Upon sale or transfer of the home, the homebuyer repays the original down payment loan, plus a share of the appreciation in the value of the home.

AMI Housing, Inc (AMIH) provides housing, employment, and life skills programs to residents of Nevada County and Placer County who otherwise might be homeless. Nevada County residents must be clients of Turning Point. AMIH offers assistance in multiple languages through a Language Line service.

All AMI programs require:

  • Proof of county residency for 14 days before being eligible for funding
  • Current income that can support housing costs going forward after any funding assistance from AMIH

AMIH and 211 offer assistance in multiple languages through a Language Line service.

Call 2-1-1 or 833-342-5211 for information about, and eligibility screening for, the following programs.

  • Homelessness Prevention - For people who are at risk of losing their current housing.
  • Rapid Rehousing - For people who are currently unhoused. Coordinated Entry intake required.
  • Transition Age Youth - For Transition Age Youth (TAY) ages 18-24 in PLACER COUNTY. Help with life skills and finding housing.
